Cathy has worked professionally as a nationally credentialed, Maryland licensed clinical art therapist for over 25 years in special education settings in Maryland. As an alumnus of NDMU's Women College (1994) who double majored in studio art and psychology in order to pursue her graduate training in the field, Cathy is passionate about undergraduate study and preparation for graduate school and eventual work in the field.
In addition to serving as the Founding Director of the NDMU Art Therapy Programs beginning in 2018, Cathy’s leadership in the field has included co-founding Make Studio in 2010, a professional studio space in Hampden for adults with disabilities to work, exhibit, and earn income as professional artists. Make Studio directly reflects her belief in the power of art, broadly, and in both process and product, to be transformative in lives.
Cathy currently serves as the Art Therapy Department Chair, Undergraduate Program Director, and the Field Instruction Coordinator, supporting field placement experiences for both undergraduates in the major and graduate students. She also serves on the Undergraduate Sub-Committee of the American Art Therapy Association Education Committee, Notre Dame of Maryland University’s Faculty Anti-Racism Task Force, and the School of Arts, Sciences, and Business’ Assessment Committee.
Cathy earned her MA from The George Washington University Graduate Art Therapy Program in 1994 and played a key role in successfully attaining state licensure for art therapists in 2012.
