Types of Financial Aid

Scholarships are a form of gift aid that help pay for college and do not need to be repaid. Awards can range from a few hundred dollars to covering the full cost of tuition and are offered by many sources, including the State of Maryland, Notre Dame of Maryland University, and external organizations. With many opportunities available, scholarships can be a powerful way to make college more affordable.

Grants are a form of free financial aid, similar to scholarships, that do not need to be repaid. They are awarded through federal, state, or University funds to students with high financial need, with eligibility determined using information from the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Loans are a form of financial aid that must be repaid with interest and are intended to help students cover college costs. Education loans generally fall into three categories: student loans, parent loans, and alternative or private loans. Notre Dame of Maryland University encourages students to borrow responsibly and understand the importance of timely repayment to protect future access to financial aid.

The NDMU Promise

The Promise Grant Program is a financial aid program that provides the University funding to first-time, full-time students enrolled in the traditional undergraduate program (both in-state and out-of-state students) who have a financial need after completing the FAFSA. The program seeks to bridge the gap between the grants provided by the state and federal governments and NDMU’s tuition.

We anticipate that 2026-2027 admitted students with an SAI of -1,500 to 0, will receive a promise grant package equal to their full tuition. Unlike a loan, the student will not have to pay this money pack.

To be considered for the program, students must file their FAFSA as soon as possible.

FAFSA

Promise Grant is capped at the initial award amount, which will not adjust with annual tuition increases. The University reserves the right to fund this scholarship using various sources of funding, and changes to the funding source may be made at the University’s discretion in accordance with its Financial Aid awarding policies. Students will be notified of any changes made to their financial aid award.
