Professor and Alum Publish Article
Dr. Stephanie Savick, Professor of Education, and Dr. Kelli Hickey'23, recently published “Teachers’ Perceptions of Sociopolitical Consciousness in the Application of Culturally Relevant Pedagogy” in the peer-reviewed journal, Issues in Teacher Education. The article is based on Dr. Hickey’s doctoral research on culturally relevant pedagogy (CRP) in K–12 schools. Grounded in CRP and the Equity Literacy Framework, her mixed-methods study examined teachers’ perceptions of the importance of culturally relevant teaching practices and how frequently they implement them, with particular attention to sociopolitical consciousness. Survey responses from 358 teachers across the United States addressed CRP’s three tenets—academic success, cultural competence, and sociopolitical consciousness—and explored differences across demographic factors. Follow-up interviews with 13 participants offered deeper insight into gaps between teachers’ beliefs and classroom practices.

School of Education Grad Student Presented at Conference
Please join the SOE in congratulating Minglan Kuo M'26 on her successful presentations at the 2026 North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE) Annual Conference and Research Symposium! Drawing on over 13 years of experience from The Society of Wilderness in Taiwan, Minglan shared valuable insights through both a poster session on volunteer development and an oral presentation highlighting NGO capacity building and volunteer networks. Her work brilliantly demonstrates how structured training empowers volunteers to become independent educators, expanding environmental education opportunities for students everywhere.
