Davis Peace Project Recipients
Congratulations to nursing majors Andrea Zuluaga ’21 and Jenae Fernandes ’21. The two were recently awarded a 2019 Projects for Peace in which they will receive a $10,000 grant to make their proposed project a reality this summer. Zuluaga and Fernandes’ project centered around the community rebuilding effort of San Pio X Parish in Itagüí, Colombia. Projects for Peace was the vision of philanthropist Kathryn W. Davis on the occasion of her 100thbirthday. Until her death at 106 in 2013, Mrs. Davis was intent on advancing the cause of peace and sought to motivate tomorrow's promising leaders by challenging them to find ways to "prepare for peace."
P4 Capstone Reception
The School of Pharmacy will celebrate its P4 student pharmacists on May 3. The annual P4 Capstone Reception will allow students to share their experiences through poster and podium presentations of interesting cases. It is set to take place in the Lobby of Knott Science Center from 2-5 p.m. Please join us and stop by to congratulate our P4 students and their excellent work. Please RSVP by April 29 to Jenna Maher.
Campus Clean-Up
The Planeteers, NDMU’s environmental awareness and sustainability club recently came together to clean-up the library stream. The group joined forces with Renaissance Institute student Susan Wolfe to organize a clean-up of the stream to pick up litter before spring rains wash it into the Chesapeake Bay. In total, volunteers collected more than ten large bags of trash from the area, and the majority of it was plastic! If you're interested in joining the Planeteers for their next clean-up, you can sign up online. It takes place at Stony Run on April 25.

“Getting Started with Cricut Design Space and Cricut Maker”: Library Pop-Up Class
April 11, 5-7 p.m., LNDL IdeaSpace and Innovation Station Learn everything necessary to create with the Cricut Maker. Participants will create a free user account, explore the Cricut Design Space interface, learn how and when to use the available design tools, and familiarize themselves with the features of the Cricut Maker. At the completion of this workshop participants will walk away with an Easter treat and have the skills and confidence to tackle their very own custom projects with the Cricut Maker, whether it’s customizing clothing and accessories, creating decorations, greeting cards, decals, or other creative projects. Faculty Accomplishments
Dr. Maria Mouratidis, professor and chair of psychology, had a paper published with her colleague in the journal Psychiatry, entitled, “The Evolving Concept of a Therapeutic Community.” NDMU Art Therapy Program Director, Cathy Goucher, recently presented at a half-day workshop in Anne Arundel County as part of an event hosted by Pathfinders for Autism.School of Education
Congratulations to Dave Morrocco for his contributions to the Sage publication, Leadership for Organizations by David A. Waldman and Charles O'Reilly, released in January 2019. Dave reviewed the text, developed digital resources and offered suggested content. Dr. Patricia Dwyer had another op-ed published in The Baltimore Sun. Dr. Stephanie Savick, Dr. Mark Fenster and Dr. Gary Thrift had their research article, Is a "Critical Mass" of Teacher Candidates Needed in a Professional Development School to Achieve a Quality Student Teaching Experience? published in the Fall Issue of School-University Partnerships, The Journal of the National Association for Professional Development Schools, vol. 11, no. 2, pp. 47-61. Associate Dean, Dr. Julian Dupuis was asked to present on a panel for “Out of this World Water” Day at Brookside Gardens in Wheaton last month. She joined keynote speaker Astronaut Ricky Arnold to discuss the importance of water education. Lisa Pallett and Rosemary Poling are launching a new partnership with the Maryland State Education Association. It will be aimed at providing our students with opportunities for professional development, access to conferences and learning how to advocate for education-related issues. Ryan Schaaf will be presenting A Brief History of the Future of Education at the Maryland International Education Consortium’s Mini Conference on April 26 at Montgomery College, Germantown Campus. The conference is titled “Developing Globally Competent Students.” NDMU will be making a huge splash at the prestigious AERA Conference in Toronto from April 5-9. The Phi Xi Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi also recently hosted a speaker for new members entitled “From Stickers to Celebrations” about restorative practices in the classroom. It was presented by Baltimore County Public Schools Assistant Principal Jennifer Pilarski.Math Night
Several students in Dr. Lisa Pallett’s methods class recently volunteered at Oakleigh Elementary Schools’ Mathematics Night. On Tuesday, Mar. 19, Niesha Carr, Maxwell Davis, Alexis Gentry, Julie Hipp, Anthea Lowe, Melina Pool and Sierra Vancek volunteered getting students and their families engaged in meaningful mathematics for a fun, learning-filled experience.

Dr. Sabita Persaud presented at the 2018 Sigma Leadership Conference in Indianapolis, IN. The presentation titled Project PLAN: Preparing Leaders to Advance Nursing, showcased School of Nursing activities supported by a 2018 Nurse Support Program II Grant from the Maryland Higher Education Commission.Drs. Marleen Thornton and Sabita Persaud recently published “Preparing Today’s Nurses: Social Determinants of Health and Nursing Education” in The Online Journal of Issues in Nursing.
Student Accomplishments
You can read more about Emma in The Daily Record's program. The Leading Women of Maryland’s Future awards were created in 2010 to celebrate successful women who are 40 years of age or younger. The Leading Woman scholarship in partnership with Keswick, was established two years ago.
Three students in the Master of Science in Nursing Program were supported by the School of Nursing to present their work as posters at the 2018 Sigma Leadership Conference in Indianapolis, IN.
- Michelle Atherton presented Pursuing Pathway to Excellence and Approaches to Nursing Education
- Natasha Maith presented Competence in Caring for Patients with Opioid Addiction: A Phenomenological Approach
- Carrie Ann Roberts presented compassion Fatigue in the Presence of Employee Engagement
On November 18, 2018, the Mu Eta Chapter of Sigma inducted 36 new members. Sigma is the international honor society of nursing and the Mu Eta Chapter is located here at NDMU. Inductees included 18 BSN students, 16 MSN students and 1 Nurse Leader.
