Drs. Stephanie Savick, Molly Dunn, and Rachel Durham from the School of Education recently published a professional journal article on their collaboration with teachers from Western, Woodlawn, and Long Reach High Schools to implement Focus on College Understanding and Success (FOCUS), a grant-funded, programmatic model to develop College Access Literacy (CAL) among both students and educators in the university's Professional Development School (PDS) network. With an emphasis on teacher training, supplemental opportunities for students, and faculty-student-parent mentor/partnerships, this model was designed to apply a culturally responsive approach in college readiness programming. Dr. Juliann Dupuis represented NDMU the weekend of February 6-9 at the Maryland Association of Environmental and Outdoor Educators (MAEOE) Conference in Ocean City, MD.

• Friday, she co-presented High-Quality EE Programs: A Self-Assessment for Nonformal Providers alongside Dr. Sarah Haines from Towson University, sharing insights from their Chesapeake Bay Trust grant work.
• Saturday, Dr. Dupuis collaborated with Laura Guelcher from Watershed Public Charter School to present Assessing Environmental Education Teacher Efficacy in a K-7 School Setting: A Case Study Approach. This project is part of a full-year professional development initiative, with Rachel providing statistical analysis support.

Drs. Lisa Pallett, Juliann Dupuis, and Katherine Beauchat presented a three-hour Project WET water education workshop at Watershed Public Charter School on Wednesday, Jan. 29.

Financial Aid Corner: Time to file your 2025-26 FAFSA!

Your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is due by March 1 to meet the Maryland State deadline and meet the priority deadline for NDMU. All US citizens and eligible non-citizens who utilize federal and/or state financial aid are required to complete the FAFSA each academic year. Students who do not file a FAFSA but receive state assistance of grants and scholarships, should visit the Maryland Higher Education Commission (www.mhec.maryland.gov) and complete the 25-26 application. Any student completing their FAFSA by March 1 will be entered into a drawing for NDMU bags of goodies, gift cards and apparel.

We recognize that there has been much in the news lately concerning the Department of Education, leaving some uncertainty of the future of the programs. The Office of Financial Aid is monitoring the situation daily. However, to change any of the programs that help our students would be an act of Congress. All NDMU faculty, staff, students and alumni are eligible for a 25% discount. NDMU Counseling Center Announces Expansion of Services

NDMU’s Counseling Center is pleased to announce a new partnership with BetterMynd which is expanding services available to NDMU students. BetterMynd provides a 24/7 on demand mental health crisis line (1-844-BTR-MYND/1-844-267-6963) available to any NDMU student experiencing a mental health crisis at any time. Students who call will receive immediate crisis assessment from a behavioral health clinician. 

NDMU students can also access BetterMynd’s Wellbeing Workshops which cover a variety of mental health related topics. These workshops are live, virtual workshops facilitated by licensed clinicians and are offered at various days and times for students’ convenience. Topics range from time management, adjusting to college, coping with depression, anger management, boundary setting, mindful eating and much more. Topics change every few weeks. Students can create an account using their NDMU email address and will automatically have access to the Wellbeing Workshops.

Collegetown Industry Day is a FREE, casual networking event to connect college students with professionals in Baltimore, taking place on Wednesday, April 2 from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the University of Baltimore Student Center.

Plan for the Evening:  
•    4-4:30 p.m.: Networking, professional photography, and light snacks
•    4:45-5:30 p.m.: Industry day panel discussions with professionals
•    5:40-6:25 p.m.: Industry day panel discussions with professionals

Health Sciences Second-year Students Encouraged to Apply for Nursing Program

Any current second-year student who is in the health sciences/caring health professions major who has completed or is completing their nursing prerequisites and have completed the majority of their NDMU general education requirements are encouraged to submit their nursing applications by February 15. Students with a GPA of 3.3 or higher do not have to take the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) exam. Students with a GPA below 3.30 must register for the TEAS exam. Exams do not have to be taken prior to the application due date. Late applications will be accepted on a space available basis. Applications can be found online or in University Academic Building (UAB), Room 240A or from Melissa Wengler in UAB 234. Students who are not in the HS/CHP major, but have also completed the above requirements are also eligible to apply using the same application and deadline.

Thursday, February 20, 6:30 PM - 8 PM, Loyola Notre Dame Library IDEA Space

Join the Karson Institute for Race, Peace, & Social Justice and LNDL for Read & Roam: Black History Month with the Karson. Dr. Kaye Whitehead, Founder and Executive Director of the Karson Institute, will lead a reading and discussion for Black History Month in the Library's IDEA Space. Following the reading, attendees will be invited to explore the Karson Institute's collections. Drinks and snacks will be provided.
