Life on Hold Exhibition Features Artwork by Incarcerated Women

“Life on Hold,” an exhibition featuring the artwork of women incarcerated at the Maryland Correctional Institution for Women, will be on display at NDMU’s Gormley Gallery from January 23 through March 3.

The exhibition, which was led and curated by Casey McKeel, includes 25 collage pieces, nine paintings, and nine audio recordings created through a collaboration with NDMU students, faculty, and staff, and with the support of community members. A series of art workshops were held at the institution during the fall of 2022.

Members of NDMU Community Travel to London over Winter Break

A group of over 40 students, faculty, Renaissance Institute members, family and friends spent 10 days overseas in London during Winter Break! The trip, organized by NDMU's English department, included several theater events, a river cruise on the Thames, and day excursions to Stonehenge, Bath, Canterbury, and the white cliffs of Dover. School of Education Awarded Grant to Help High School Students Become Teachers

NDMU’s School of Education, in partnership with Baltimore County Public Schools, is set to take the lead in providing opportunities for high school students from diverse backgrounds to enroll in college and join the teaching profession.

NDMU’s new Educator Preparation Pathway to Increase College Completion (EPPICC) initiative was made possible through a $140,000 grant awarded by the Maryland Higher Education Outreach and College Access Program. The School of Education will partner with Baltimore County high schools throughout the remainder of the 2022-23 academic year.

Providing Hope to Others: NDMU Alumnae Continues Lifelong Passion for Service in Malawi

Shannon (Berry) Bachmann ’13 has always had a passion for service. Her volunteer work dates back to middle school, and attending NDMU on a service scholarship gave her additional opportunities to give back to surrounding areas.

Getting married and moving to Switzerland in 2017 initiated the next step in Bachmann’s commitment, as she now serves as a board member for Extending Hope, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing long-term, sustainable growth opportunities to communities in Malawi.

Women's Basketball Wins Eighth-Straight, Improves to 10-0 in CSAC Standings

NDMU's women's basketball team increased its winning streak to eight games on Saturday following a dominant 84-30 victory at Cairn. The Gators (14-3, 10-0 CSAC) have sole possession of first place in the CSAC standings, and they are three games ahead of their closest competitors with eight games remaining in regular season play. NDMU's next home contest in MBK Sports Complex is a 1 p.m. matchup against Saint Elizabeth on Saturday, January 28.

Student/Faculty/Staff Updates

School of Arts, Sciences & Business

Dr. Yasmine Awais, an associate professor and research coordinator for NDMU's Master of Arts in Art Therapy program, successfully defended her dissertation on January 9. The title of her dissertation was - It Has Always Been The “Business Model”: Racism and Sexism in Creative Arts Therapy Higher Education. The dissertation was part of the Ph.D. requirements for the Social Welfare Program at the Graduate Center, The City University of New York.

Alyssa Brumis, a visiting assistant professor in the communication arts department, recently had a chapter titled "The Twilight Zone: Case Studies in Misinformation & Mass Media" published in Disinformation Studies: Perspectives from an Emerging Field.

Dr. Jessica Davis, assistant professor and chair of NDMU’s Philosophy Department, recently accepted an invitation to join the Editorial Review Board for Analytic Teaching and Philosophical Praxis, an online, open access, peer-reviewed, academic journal which publishes scholarly articles making original and significant contributions to philosophy in education.

Nicole Dular, assistant professor in the philosophy department, recently attended the Eastern Division meeting of the American Philosophical Association. While there, she was invited to give comments in a session on the topic of intersectionality.

Dr. Jennifer Wester, an associate professor in the art department, recently published a peer-reviewed article in the Journal of Curatorial Studies. Entitled "Iris Clert's Modern Matronage," the article is a feminist reevaluation of the legacy of Iris Clert, who ran an important avant-garde gallery in Paris in the 1950s and 60s.

School of Education

Kim Eggborn, a student in the School of Education’s Instructional Leadership for Changing Populations PhD program, was recently presented with a Certificate of Recognition by Howard County Executive Calvin Ball. Eggborn, who serves as the Elementary Social Studies Coordinator for Howard County Public Schools, was one of the first 10 educators from across the nation to have an essay selected for inclusion in Why History Matters: American History Teachers Speak Out, a book set to be released in early 2023 by the Driving Force Institute for Public Engagement (DFI).

School of Nursing

Students from the School of Nursing's 15-month Accelerated 2nd Degree Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) program were recognized in a pinning ceremony held in Marikle Chapel on December 15. Congratulations to the new graduates!
