NDMU Hosts Dedication Ceremony for Sr. Sharon Slear Center for Service, Social Justice & Community Engagement
Notre Dame of Maryland University students, faculty, staff, and community supporters gathered inside MBK Lobby on Thursday, August 31, as NDMU's Office of Service & Community Engagement was officially rededicated as the Sister Sharon Slear Center for Service, Social Justice, and Community Engagement.
A Notre Dame graduate who was first appointed to the faculty in 1988, Sister Sharon now serves as Special Projects Assistant to the President after retiring from her role as Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs following the 2021-22 academic year. We are forever thankful to Sister Sharon for her many years of service to Notre Dame, Baltimore, and areas in need across the world.

NDMU's Soccer, Volleyball Programs Dominate in 2023 Home Openers
NDMU's soccer and volleyball programs combined to go 3-0 in their respective home openers on campus over the past two weeks, with all three teams winning in dominant fashion. Women's soccer was up first with a 9-0 victory over Gallaudet on September 1. Jillian Seay '27 led the attack with three goals and an assist.
Men's soccer then posted a historic 11-0 triumph over Gallaudet on September 9 to earn the first win in program history. Six different Gators scored goals, with Hector Alvarez '25 (four goals, three assists) netting a team-high 11 points. Women's volleyball made it 3 for 3 in home openers with a straight-sets victory over Hood on September 12. Miasia Ferrer '24 led the offense with 12 kills, while Paulina Hernandez had a team-high five aces and 24 digs.
Seay, Alvarez, and Hernandez have all earned United East Conference Player of the Week awards to begin the fall season.
NDMU’s Operation TEACH Program Provides Unique Post-Graduate Service Opportunity for New Educators
Michael McGarrity M’24 majored in finance as an undergraduate, with plans to begin a career in risk management or actuarial science after graduation. Late in his junior year, however, he began to realize that this path towards the corporate world, which he had focused his studies on for several years, was not for him.
Enter NDMU’s Operation TEACH program, a unique two-year, post-graduate service opportunity in which participants earn a Master of Arts in Education while beginning their careers teaching at a local Catholic school.

Professor Ryan Schaaf Featured in National Catholic Review Article
Ryan Schaaf, Associate Professor of Educational Technology in the School of Education, was featured in a recent National Catholic Review Article titled "Artificial Intelligence Is Making Research Faster; Can It Also Help Make Catholic Colleges More Catholic?" In the article, Schaaf discusses the growth of artificial intelligence, and its opportunity to become a positive companion for people in both their faith and their everyday lives.
Faculty and Staff Discount Available for Alumnae and Alumni Weekend Events
The Alumnae and Alumni Engagement Office is extending a special discount for faculty and staff to attend keystone events during Alumnae and Alumni Weekend as a way to show gratitude for all that they do. To receive the discount, faculty and staff must use the unique link for paid events by Sunday, September 17. Below are the two events that include the faculty and staff discount. There are also five other free receptions and events open to faculty and staff. Please register for these events if you plan on attending. Please note that there is a required $5 registration fee for each faculty or staff member attending any event during the weekend.
