NDMU Celebrates the Class of 2024
Congratulations to the entire Notre Dame of Maryland University Class of 2024! Our latest graduating class was honored downtown at the Baltimore Convention Center on Wednesday, May 22. A full collection of photos and video from the ceremony is available at the link below.
$2.2M Renovation to Alumnae Field Through Go Beyond Campaign Includes New Turf Playing Surface
NDMU's primary outdoor athletics field is undergoing a $2.2 million renovation this summer, funded by the historic $50 million Go Beyond campaign, with the installation of a new turf surface which will provide substantial benefits to both the Athletics Department and the general campus community.
Construction of the new turf playing surface for Alumnae Field began in mid-May 2024 and is expected to be completed by August 2024. In addition to the turf field itself, the project includes an upgraded stormwater drainage system, a new retaining wall and fencing along the road side of the facility, and replacement netting behind the goals.
Influential Scholar Named 2024 Mullan Distinguished Teacher
An NDMU education professor with an extensive background in teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) was named the 2024-25 Mullan Distinguished Teacher, the University’s highest faculty honor.
Dr. Christa de Kleine joined the School of Education faculty in 1998, after having served as an adjunct faculty member for two years. In 2000, she launched the University’s TESOL program, including a master’s degree offering, and she has served as its program coordinator ever since. In 2020, she was named Teacher of the Year in Higher Education by the Maryland TESOL organization.

Trailblazer Scholars Recognized at Graduation Reception
Congratulations to our Class of 2024 Trailblazer Scholars, who were celebrated prior to Commencement at a senior reception in Doyle Formal on May 16! Launched in 2010, the Trailblazers Program provides continuing support to first-generation undergraduate students throughout their time at Notre Dame.
Endowed Chair for Nursing Leadership Travels to Turkey to Support Healthcare Providers
An associate professor in NDMU’s School of Nursing recently wrapped up a month-long stay in Izmir, Turkey, where she assisted a team of nurse researchers providing training to benefit survivors of intimate partner violence.
Dr. Tina Bloom, the Frances Kay Pitts ’96 Endowed Chair for Nursing Leadership in Women’s and Children’s Health, worked with nursing colleagues at Ege University on a project funded by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey. The group organized weekly training and certification sessions to healthcare providers in Izmir, helping them understand, recognize, and respond to intimate partner violence, and subsequently connect abuse survivors to a variety of resources.
Office of Accessibility and Student Inclusion Moves to New Location in Theresa Hall
The Office of Accessibility and Student Inclusion is thrilled to announce that, effective May 24, 2024, we have relocated to a new, more accessible office. Our new location will be in Theresa Hall, lower level, room 023, right next to the Student Success Center and the Accessibility Testing Center.
This move brings several benefits, enhancing our visibility and ease of access for all students:
- Improved Accessibility: Our new office location is designed with accessibility in mind, ensuring that all students, including those with mobility challenges, can easily reach us.
- Enhanced Visibility: Being situated next to the Student Success Center and the Accessibility Testing Center places us in a central hub for student support services, making it easier for students to find and access our resources.
- Proximity to Key Services: Our new office location allows us to be closer to essential student services, facilitating better collaboration and providing a seamless support experience for students.
Renaissance Institute Announces 2024 Award Recipients
The Renaissance Institute relies upon the dedicated volunteerism of its members to ensure that the lifelong learning program remains relevant and inviting to its membership. RI honors outstanding volunteers annually with legacy awards that include free membership benefits. This year’s award ceremony attracted 85 members for a lunch to both celebrate the winners and bid farewell to the institute's retiring director, Shirley Bigley LaMotte.
The Reidy Award winner was presented to Carol Daddazio for working tirelessly, and what might appear thanklessly, behind the scenes to support the programs and activities of Renaissance. Carol is the 2024 Renaissance Unsung Hero. She is a newly elected member of the Council, serves on the curriculum committee, provides technical support to Zoom instructors and is co-chair of the Renaissance Institute Legacy Lectures Series.
The Father Joseph Connolly Award recognizes leadership, outstanding and long service, generosity of spirit, and active participation in the Renaissance Institute. John Meredith, a former RI president and musical impresario, was honored for his stewardship of Renaissance’s many music programs. Also honored was RI council member and membership committee chair, Joe Lapicki. Joe stepped in to chair the RI Finance Committee when the position was unexpectedly vacated.
Two RI members also stepped up and worked tirelessly behind the scenes to assist with office operations. Showing amazing commitment, Vickie Lapicki and Joyce Dennison each received the Director’s Award for their extraordinary support of the Renaissance Institute, its staff, and its members.

Occupational Therapy Doctorate Program
NDMU's Occupational Therapy Doctorate (OTD) program has launched a new podcast titled "The Green Room," which will discuss sustainable development, healthcare, occupational therapy and related professions, and the importance and value in quality education. The podcast, which debuted in May, is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and more, and also has an Instagram page @the_greenroompodcast.
Dr. Tamerill Faison, an adjunct professor for the OTD program, had an article titled "Trauma-Informed Care: Developing Fieldwork Competence" published in the June 2024 issue of OT Practice magazine.
School of Pharmacy
The School of Pharmacy celebrated its Class of 2024 with a Doctor of Pharmacy Hooding Ceremony in LeClerc Theatre on May 21, the day prior to commencement. A photo gallery from the ceremony is available on the SOP's Flickr page.
Three pharmacy students were recently selected as Maryland Pharmacists Association Foundation Student Scholarship and Student Scholarship recipients. Congratulations to Dr. Edgardo Rodriguez D'24, Jahanvi Patel D'25 and Kunjrani Pani D'25 on this deserved recognition!
