Education Professor Earns Statewide Award for Teaching Excellence

An NDMU School of Education professor earned a statewide award in recognition of his efforts promoting the effective use of technology in the classroom. Ryan Schaaf was selected as the inaugural Outstanding HigherEd Award winner by the Maryland Society for Educational Technology. The HigherEd Award is designed to recognize an outstanding full-time or part-time faculty member, dean, department chair, or president in the state of Maryland who supports the MSET’s mission of advancing excellence in teaching and leading with technology.

School of Arts, Sciences & Business

Dr. Anne Henderson, associate professor and chair of NDMU's History/Political Science Department, was invited to speak at her 40th College Reunion at her alma mater, Harvard University, to discuss her work in the fields of global conflict resolution and peacebuilding. The talk focused on her participation in US- and UN-sponsored interventions in Africa, the Middle East, and the Balkans, and on how she uses her experiences in humanitarian intervention missions to inform her teaching. Dr. Henderson highlighted the NDMU mission and how it prepare students for global leadership; she used the example of a recent first-generation NDMU alum (Christina Newton '18) who recently completed a graduate degree at Harvard.
School of Education

Dr. Kristine Larson, assistant professor in the School of Education, recently represented NDMU in India for an extended trip highlighting the University’s new International Teacher Education Partnership Program. Dr. Larson, pictured third from right in the front row at Banaras Hindu University, spent time at several schools recruiting students for the ITEP program. The initiative is designed to provide international students with an opportunity to travel to the United States to earn a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, or certification credits.

Congratulations to Michele Schuler, a PhD student in the School of Education and current teacher in Anne Arundel County Public Schools, on receiving the Mildred Murray Memorial Recruitment Grant from the Xi Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, an honorary society for women educators. The grant is awarded to women who are studying to become teachers, who are gaining recertification, or who are working towards an advanced degree in the field of education. Schuler is in the proposal stage of her doctoral work, with an anticipated graduation date within the next two years. Her research focus is on teacher voice as it relates to equity initiatives in Maryland public schools. Schuler's dissertation committee includes Dr. Stephanie Savick, Dr. Rachel Durham, and Dr. Maisha Gillins.

Congratulations to the latest graduates of NDMU's traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program, who were celebrated during a pinning ceremony at Marikle Chapel on May 18! More photos from the ceremony are available on NDMU's Flickr page.

The 2023 Graduation Awards Banquet was held at The Grand Baltimore on May 19, while the Doctor of Pharmacy Hooding Ceremony took place in LeClerc Theatre on May 21.
