This workshop will cover the basics of copyright law, the public domain, using materials already licensed for use either through the library or Creative Commons, and seeking copyright permissions. It will also provide information on the fair use provision in copyright law and how it can be applied to using copyrighted materials in teaching and research. Participants will work through examples to help make them feel comfortable applying fair use. This workshop will be held online using Zoom. Login instructions will be sent to registered attendees.

NDMU Welcomes Students Back to Campus for Fall Semester

Notre Dame of Maryland University Welcome Crew volunteers, residence advisors and orientation leaders teamed up to assist new and returning undergraduate students as they arrived on campus last weekend. After move-in was completed on Friday and Saturday, orientation activities included an outdoor cookout behind Doyle Hall, a Lighting the Way lantern chain event with the entire student body and a wacky waffle extravaganza to conclude the weekend Sunday night. Welcome home, Gators!

Nursing Student Awarded Leading Women Scholarship

Michaela Cousins ‘23 was awarded the 2022 Leading Women Scholarship at a ceremony hosted by The Daily Record in downtown Baltimore last week. The scholarship is meant to recognize a student who excels in community leadership and is committed to inspiring change in healthcare.

A Dean’s List student, Cousins works as both a home health aide and a patient care technician in a specialized gerontology unit at Anne Arundel Medical Center, and she is also a class representative for the Student Association of Nurses at Notre Dame.

NDMU's New Master's Offerings Set to Meet Rising National Demand for Nurse Practitioners

“We’re hoping that our graduates will be able to give back to the greater Baltimore community. There are a lot of people in the Baltimore area who are in desperate need of healthcare, and our goal is to directly impact the lives of Baltimorians.”

The demand for more nurse practitioners is higher than any other healthcare field in the United States. NDMU is now positioned to help meet that need, with two new nurse practitioner master’s programs set to welcome their first students for the fall 2022 semester.

Suzy Kopf’s Orange Crush on Display at Gormley Gallery from September 6 – October 7

A promotional display for Orange Crush

Gormley Gallery, located on the second floor of Fourier Hall, is pleased to present Orange Crush, a solo exhibition by Baltimore-based artist Suzy Kopf. The exhibition will be on display beginning Tuesday, September 6 and continuing through Friday, October 7. Kopf will be on campus for an Artist’s Reception on Saturday, September 17 from 4 to 6 p.m., and she will hold a Gallery Talk on Friday, September 23 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.

NDMU Athletics Begins Fall Season on September 1

NDMU volleyball members celebrate on court

NDMU’s field hockey, soccer and volleyball programs will begin their 2022 seasons with a trio of road contests this week. Field hockey travels to Washington College and volleyball plays at Goucher on Thursday, while soccer heads to Gallaudet for a Friday night matchup. The first home games on campus for the Gators are set for Thursday, September 7, when soccer hosts Trinity at 4 p.m. and volleyball takes on McDaniel at 7 p.m.

The volleyball program, which has reached the CSAC championship game in each of the last three seasons, was ranked No. 2 in the conference's preseason poll.

NDMU PhD Student Honored as Maryland History Day Middle School Teacher of the Year

Devin Page

An NDMU PhD student was recently selected as the Maryland History Day Middle School Teacher of the Year in recognition of his work supporting students throughout a year-long research competition. Devin Page M’02, who previously earned a master’s degree from Notre Dame in elementary education and teaching, is now enrolled in NDMU’s Instructional Leadership for Changing Populations doctorate program.

With the state award, Page became eligible for National History Day Teacher of the Year consideration, and he was recognized as a top six finalist for that honor in June.

Baltimore Collegetown Shuttle Resumes Service for Fall Semester

The Baltimore Collegetown shuttle

The Baltimore Collegetown Shuttle resumed full service for the fall semester on Monday. The shuttle goes to three schools - Johns Hopkins University (Homewood Campus), Notre Dame of Maryland University and Towson University. In addition to the three schools, it stops at Penn Station, Towson Town Center, Towson Place Shopping Center, and the Shops at Kenilworth.

Anyone with an NDMU ID (student, faculty, and staff) is eligible to utilize the shuttle's services for free, and riders may be accompanied by up to two guests.

School of Arts, Sciences & Business

The Philosophy Department is happy to welcome Dr. Nicole Dular, Assistant Professor of Philosophy, to its faculty! Dr. Dular received her Ph.D. in Philosophy from Syracuse University. Her research interests include Ethics, Epistemology, and Feminist Philosophy.

Dr. Jessica Davis, Chair and Assistant Professor of Philosophy, was appointed as Co-Chair of the Social and Societal Ethics Special Interest Section of the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics.

NDMU and the Philosophy Department will host the Northeast Regional Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl on Saturday, December 3rd. Please be on the lookout for volunteer opportunities!

Dr. Paul Weldon, Professor in the Biology Department, was a featured speaker for several days at the Reptile Discovery Center in Deland, Florida, this summer. While there, he gave educational presentations to large audiences of children, who had the opportunity to interact with live snakes.

Ryan Schaaf, Associate Professor of Educational Technology, recently released his 7th book Learner Choice, Learner Voice from Routledge. It was featured on Fox 08 in North Carolina, as one of his co-authors was interviewed.

School of Nursing

Dr. Rodnita Davis, assistant professor and director of NDMU's entry-level nursing programs, successfully defended her dissertation, An Interpretive Exploration of Racial and Ethnic Minority, First-Generation Undergraduate Nursing Students' College Experience: A Hermeneutic Study.
