Major
Classical and Modern Foreign Languages Department
The bachelor's degree in Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) offers an immersive study of language and culture in two world languages. As the world becomes increasing globally connected, the ability to speak multiple languages and understand various cultural perspectives can provide a competitive advantage in pursuing career opportunities.

The Modern Foreign Languages major is recommended for those who:

  • have language proficiency in at least one language other than English;
  • wish to pursue a career abroad or in international relations; or
  • aim to teach in secondary schools.

How it Works

Choose French or Spanish as the main language. For the second language, choose either the remaining language (French or Spanish) or select a language offered through the Baltimore College Consortium.

Pursue a Teaching Career

If your dream is to ultimately become a teacher, NDMU offers two options:

  • Your advisor can help you pair the required education courses with your Modern Foreign Language degree to earn a Secondary Teaching Certification.
  • You can pursue the 5-year BA/MAT program to earn a BA in Modern Foreign Language and an MA in Teaching.

Both options will prepare you to become certified to teach a content area in secondary schools (grades 7-12). To become certified to teach English as a second language, graduate study is required. Explore our MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages for additional information.
