Featuring Charita Cole Brown, mental health advocate and author of Defying the Verdict: My Bipolar Life

Charita joins the NDMU community to share her story of being diagnosed with bipolar I disorder in her final semester of college, and being told by doctors that she would never lead a “normal” life. As a recognized educator and leader, Charita shares her story of hope strongly grounded in faith and activism to remove stigmas surrounding mental illness. There will be a Q&A hosted by Marie Allee, Ph.D., Director of Counseling Services. Copies of Defying the Verdict will be available for signing during this session. This event is sponsored by the Women's Leadership Institute of Baltimore.

NDMU Becomes Gender Inclusive

For more than 125 years, Notre Dame of Maryland University has broken barriers to provide high quality higher education to generations of diverse students. NDMU has continuously expanded its reach to create new educational opportunities for underserved populations and build inclusive communities. On Sept. 12, 2022, the NDMU Board of Trustees voted unanimously that the University become gender inclusivel and enroll men into the traditional undergraduate program starting in fall 2023.

Knott Science Center Renovation Showcases STEM in Action

The Knott Science Center at NDMU is undergoing a $9 million renovation to create innovative learning and collaborative spaces to enhance student learning and success in STEM. The NDMU community joined with state and local officials and supporters to celebrate the renovation on Sept. 8.

The renovation, expected to be completed in early 2023, will create glass-walled classrooms and labs to display science in action, instructional spaces for student-faculty collaboration, specialized research labs, and flexible group learning spaces.

Several Student-Athletes Earn Weekly CSAC Awards

Paulina Hernandez and Sara Morales

Four NDMU student-athletes were recognized by the Colonial States Athletic Conference for their accomplishments during the first two weeks of the fall season. Paulina Hernandez, a junior for the volleyball program, earned her second career weekly CSAC Defensive Player of the Week award on Sept. 5, and she added CSAC Honor Roll accolades the following week. Teammates Emma Mueller and Gabbi Taganas were also named to the CSAC Honor Roll early in the 2022 season for the volleyball program, while soccer senior Sara Morales added Honor Roll recognition after scoring a hat trick during a 6-2 season-opening victory for the Gators over Gallaudet.

Baltimore Collegetown Shuttle Resumes Service for Fall Semester

The Baltimore Collegetown shuttle

The Baltimore Collegetown Shuttle has resumed full service for the fall semester. The shuttle goes to three schools - Johns Hopkins University (Homewood Campus), Notre Dame of Maryland University and Towson University. In addition to the three schools, it stops at Penn Station, Towson Town Center, Towson Place Shopping Center, and the Shops at Kenilworth.

Anyone with an NDMU ID (student, faculty, and staff) is eligible to utilize the shuttle's services for free, and riders may be accompanied by up to two guests.

Dr. Kristine Larson, Assistant Professor in the School of Education, and Dr. Stephanie Savick, Associate Professor, recently had an article published in a special guest issue of the NAPDS journal, School University Partnerships entitled "A Culture of Caring in School–University Partnerships." The purpose of the issue was to celebrate the ways school-university partnerships have thrived, examine the overlapping ideas of nurturing pedagogy, self-care, and social emotional learning, share ideas that address and confront educational inequities, and explore the ways in which school–university partnerships have supported the social emotional health and well-being of all partnership stakeholders. The citation for the article is below:

School of Pharmacy

Dr. Matthew Shimoda, Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Associate Professor of Clinical and Administrative Sciences, will serve as interim dean of the School of Pharmacy for the 2022-23 academic year. Dr. Anne Lin, the School's founding dean, departed on September 7 after nearly 15 years of service to the University.

YES Program Information Session

Volunteers would tutor at two local schools, helping elementary and middle school students in a variety of subjects. They will also have the opportunity to assist with additional after-school programs. The York Road Education and Service (YES) Program is a collaboration between NDMU and the Campus Compact Mid-Atlantic AmeriCorps VISTA program, designed to increase college awareness and preparedness among local Baltimore youth.

MCIW Art Collaboration Interest Meeting

Meeting for those interested in participating in an artistic collaboration with women incarcerated at the Maryland Correctional Institution for Women (MCIW) in Jessup, MD. This collaboration will involve working with the women to create art about their experience of incarceration, and will lead to an exhibition in Gormley Gallery in January and February, followed by an exhibition at MCIW in the spring. All are welcome to this informal informational meeting.
