Notre Dame provided me with a unique and valuable experience of classroom theory and strategy, combined with practical work experience in multiple student-teaching placements. I made great relationships with fellow classmates as well as professors.
The MAT/GEI program allows you to obtain the necessary skills to become an educator and utilize resources and support from your classmates, professors, and supervisors to advance your career. The convenience of this program helps one gain a professional presence to lead a classroom as well as practice teaching in real classrooms in an internship that is longer than most programs.
The GEI/MAT program was everything I was looking for. This cohort prepares you for success in and out of the classroom while also building lifelong relationships with your peers and mentors. Looking back I have nothing but great things to say about this program and how much it molded me into the teacher I am today.
After undergrad, I knew I wanted to be a teacher, but hadn't majored in education. I expected to feel comparably prepared for the classroom following my 10 months in GEI as students who spent four college years studying education, and GEI did not disappoint. The combination of intensive pedagogical study, daily feet-on-the-ground classroom experiences, and 10-month timeline make for a program that surpasses all expectations.
Notre Dame provided me with the tools, experience, and knowledge of special education and differentiation necessary to meet the needs of all students. Notre Dame has taught me that teaching English learners is not only about knowing pedagogy and theory, but also about approaching students - no matter their background - with compassion and empathy…I truly believe that the TESOL program has equipped me with invaluable tools and knowledge that will help me serve my future students as best as I can…I am excited to utilize all that I learned at NDMU to help English learners realize and reach their full potential. Governor Larry Hogan appointed Jenell to the Maryland Board of Nursing as the Registered Nurse-At-Large member. She began her term in February 2018 and will serve for four years by bringing a firsthand perspective of the issues and trends impacting nursing care in Maryland. Jenell has been a registered nurse for five years and works at Johns Hopkins Bayview.
I feel fortunate to now be teaching at the same school where I interned. The cohort experience provides an invaluable, built-in support-system of faculty and classmates. The structure of the GEI program met all of my expectations and I graduated feeling confident and well-prepared to begin my career in teaching.

Michtta was selected for the Senior Commissioned Officer Student Training and Extern Program (SRCOSTEP) by the U.S. Public Health Service. As one of nine trainees from across the country, Michtta will be commissioned as an Ensign while she completes her Doctor of Pharmacy. Upon graduation, she will be a commissioned officer assigned to the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
