NDMU Announces Updated COVID-19 Protocols

Given recent updates from the CDC and the end of the Baltimore City indoor mask mandate, effective Wednesday, March 2, 2022, NDMU has adopted a mask-optional policy for all students, faculty, staff, and visitors, with the following exceptions:

  • Face masks will continue to be required in all classroom settings, including labs and other instructional spaces. This measure remains in place out of an abundance of caution, given the increased density over a prolonged period of time in many instructional settings.  
  • Masks should also be worn by anyone who is positive or has symptoms of COVID-19 or has been exposed to someone with the virus.

NDMU Students Place 13th at APPE Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl

Four seniors recently represented Notre Dame on the national stage, as they competed virtually along with 35 other schools in the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics (APPE) Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl.

Kristina Pickering ’22, Raquel Pompey ’22, Kylie Simonson ’22 and Cecia Zavala Ramos ’22 clinched NDMU’s first appearance in the competition after posting a top-three finish at regionals back in November. Facing some of the country’s top collegiate teams, they placed 13th overall after completing their four matches with two victories, one tie and one defeat, with the lone setback coming to a team from the University of Oklahoma which ultimately advanced to the quarterfinals.

NDMU Lacrosse, the Defending CSAC Champs, Begins Season on Friday

NDMU lacrosse, which has won each of the last two Colonial States Athletic Conference championships in 2021 and 2019, opens up the 2022 campaign with a 4 p.m. home game against Marian University on Friday.

The Gators finished with a 7-1 record last spring, including a 16-4 victory over Wilson College in the CSAC final. They were picked to top the conference again in this year's CSAC preseason poll.

Renaissance Institute Moves to Feeley International Center

Renaissance Institute, NDMU’s Lifelong Learning program, has relocated its office and several classrooms to Feeley international Center on the ground floor of Meletia Hall. The move took place just before spring semester commenced, allowing Renaissance members to return to campus classes after a long COVID hiatus. 

The Institute is offering 50 classes for Spring 2022 both on campus and via Zoom, and will do the same in Fall 2022. The Institute welcomes new members aged 50-plus, and encourages NDMU community members to consider teaching a 6, 7, or 13-week class.

Course proposals for Fall 2022 are being solicited now. Contact Curriculum Committee chair, Terry Weisser (terryweisser@gmail.com) for information on teaching, and Sandy Adams (sadams@ndm.edu) for membership information.

Jessica Davis, Assistant Professor of Philosophy, will participate in the Philosophy of Education Society (PES) conference March 12-13, where she will present on the “Challenges to Educational Authority Posed by Philosophy for/with Children” panel. Jessica was also recently appointed to the PES Committee on the Status of Women and will attend that meeting during the conference.

Dr. Jeana DelRosso, Department of English, was invited to give a talk on March 3 via zoom in the public lecture series, Women Who Changed the Church, at the Margaret Beaufort Institute of Theology in Cambridge, UK.  Her talk was titled, "On Unruly Catholic Nuns: Creative Responses to Catholicism."

BALTIMORE – For Lesly Mendoza ’21 and Marion Smedberg ’19, interest in a career in science was cultivated at a young age.

A strong support system can be crucial in a country where women made up just 27 percent of all STEM workers in 2019, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Raising that number has been a priority throughout the history of Notre Dame of Maryland University, with Smedberg and Mendoza just two examples of that work continuing today.
