Commencement 2017
On Saturday, May 20, the NDMU Class of 2017 graduated! The ceremony, which took place at the Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore, was well attended by the families and friends of our incredible graduates. Graduates heard from Dr. Nancy Birdsall, a senior fellow and president emeritus of the Center for Global Development, as well as fellow graduate Naomi Cross BSN ’15, MSN ’17, who offered the Student Response.
In the week leading up to commencement, the graduating class had a number of celebrations, including traditional events such as the Senior Awards Luncheon, the Morrissy Program Brunch, and the Trailblazers' Celebration. This year, the graduating class also initiated a new tradition by creating a time capsule to be opened during Reunion Weekend in 2042!

Sister Eileen - Taking on a New Role
This month, Sr. Eileen O'Dea, a long-standing member of the NDMU community, is taking on a new role at the University. She is stepping away from serving as Vice President for University Mission and taking an advisory position. Sr. Eileen has been a part of the NDMU family for over 30 years, serving in a variety of roles to support the mission of the university. Sr. Eileen is a beloved member of the university community and holds a special place in the hearts of the faculty and staff, especially those who have benefitted from her mission orientation sessions, designed to teach the university's history and mission.
The NDMU community held a special reception in honor of Sr. Eileen and her years of service to the university; faculty and staff had the opportunity to speak with Sr. Eileen and to thank her for all that she has done for NDMU. Sr. Eileen made a beautiful speech about her career at NDMU and her vision for the future of the university.

Reunion 2017
Registration Opens June 15!
Reunion 2017 is almost here! A fun-filled weekend of reconnecting and rediscovery is planned for September 15 - 17/. With traditional favorites, like Flashback Friday and the annual Crab Feast, as well as some new additions like WOW Bites, Reunion 2017 is not to be missed!
Registration for Reunion 2017 will open on June 15th, so be sure to check NDMU Reunion for the schedule, to see a list of who's coming, and to complete your own registration. Advance registration closes September 8. Walk-up registration will be available at Reunion.

Adelante Latina! Part Time Teaching Position and Volunteer Opportunities
Adelante Latina! is searching for volunteers and experienced teachers to help to prepare Baltimore City Latina girls for the SAT, college, and the college and scholarship application process.
Adelante Latina! is a three-year, after school, college-prep program for Baltimore City Latina girls. Students are recruited from Baltimore City public high schools in their freshman year and participate in Adelante Latina! from their sophomore to their senior year. The program’s main objective is to prepare the students for college and to help them with the college and scholarship application process. The focus is on improving student vocabulary, reading comprehension and writing skills, as well as helping them with SAT preparation.
Adelante Latina! meets from early September to early June, with a 5-week break from mid-December to late January. Meetings take place twice a week from 4:15-6:15 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Esperanza Center located at 430 S. Broadway. On one day, students meet as sophomore, junior and senior cohorts with a teacher, on the other day each student has a one-on-one volunteer tutor.

Hiring a Once-a-Week English Teacher!
We are looking for a once-a-week English teacher for our sophomore cohort. Prior teaching experience at a junior high or high school level is required. The teacher designs the curriculum for the year for the 12-student cohort and also gives weekly instructions for the one-on-one tutors to follow. Payment is $2,500 per semester with the expectation that the teacher commits to a full academic year. For more information please contact Leonor Blum at blumle@aol.com or 410-591-0547.
Once-a-Week Volunteer Tutors Needed for Adelante Latina! After School Program
Adelante Latina! is looking for committed volunteers to work with students one day per week. The hope is for tutors to continue with the same student for all three years. Tutors are expected to speak proper, grammatical English. Although teaching experience is not required, it is helpful. Tutors must be able to teach reading comprehension, writing skills and vocabulary on a high school level. If they are teaching juniors or seniors, tutors will also help with the SAT verbal test preparation. Answers to the SAT questions are always provided but the teacher is expected to explain them. In general, assignments given by the Adelante Latina! cohort teacher are given priority, followed by help with school assignments in the humanities. We would be delighted to have two to three tutors who can explain math and who can help with the new Math SAT. For more information please contact Leonor Blum at blumle@aol.com or 410-591-0547.

Nightingale and Nachos Nursing Open Mic Night
On Friday, May 12, the School of Nursing (SON) celebrated SON alumnae and graduating seniors. The event was one of several Nurses Week celebrations hosted by the SON, and offered students, alumnae, and faculty the opportunity to share bedside stories from their work in the nursing profession. Stories ranged from hilarious anecdotes to heart-warming examples of care, each speaking to the importance of the nursing profession. Students enjoyed the opportunity to speak with alumnae, and alumnae enjoyed catching up with their classmates and professors.
The event included a margarita and nachos bar, and was well attended by students, alumnae, and faculty; everyone had a blast and cannot wait to attend this event again next year!

100 St. Albans Way
The University Board of Trustees voted at its most recent meeting to place the off-campus property, located at 100 St. Albans Way on the market. The property, which serves as president’s residence was acquired in 2012. It also has been the location for some limited events including some that occurred during Reunion Weekends.
The Board’s decision to sell the property is directly aligned with advancing the University’s current and future priorities. It will go on the market this summer and once sold, President Marylou Yam will relocate to a private residence near campus.
For those of you attending Reunion Weekend this year, know that those events hosted in the President’s Residence will be held right on campus in the spaces we love.

London 2018: Literary England and London Theatre
The annual NDMU English department trip to London is back for 2018! Mark your calendars for January 8 -18, 2018 for this incredible opportunity to travel with NDMU faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends for a 10-day tour of London, Bath, Chowton (Jane Austen's final home), and Stratford-upon-Avon.
This trip is open to the entire campus community and includes: round-trip airfare on British Airways, nine (9) nights' hotel stay with a daily full English breakfast, tickets to three (3) theatre productions (including a Royal Shakespeare Company performance), ground transportation for three (3) day trips, admissions to some attractions, and one group dinner.
