a Ribbon, a Pearl, a Sedimentary Rock

Exhibition Dates: January 27, 2020–March 6, 2020

A Ribbon, a Pearl, a Sedimentary Rock gathers together a selection of artists who forage and borrow imagery––from the internet, from the natural world, from cultural content––to deconstruct the multiplicity of femininity and femme. Signifiers of the feminine––bows, pearls, ribbons––are reexamined as potent objects holding history, wrath, whispers, and power, and femme is reimagined as a process of collecting, constructing, borrowing, and building. Situated in the gallery of Notre Dame, a Ribbon, a Pearl, a Sedimentary Rock reflects on the founding and physical construction of the women’s college on an uncultivated 33-acre plot of flora and fauna at the end of the nineteenth century to reimagine a new thriving garden in its midst.

The exhibition is curated by Allie Linn and features the work of Kira Bell, Anna K. Crooks,Taina Cruz, Coco Klockner, Michelle Luong, Maya Martinez, and Pangelica.

The annual Student Exhibit is a salon-style exhibition of work by students enrolled in art courses in the fall semester.

Into Light

Exhibition Dates: October 28 through November 22, 2019

INTO LIGHT documents through personal portraits the tragic loss of human life caused by the drug addiction crisis in Baltimore. The exhibition features the work of artist Theresa Clower, who lost her own son to an opioid overdose, and who is using art to ease her pain and connect others who have experienced similar loss. Clower has created graphite portraits of 40 Marylanders lost to drug addiction. Through art, INTO LIGHT honors and celebrates those individuals, bringing light to their lives, rather than the darkness surrounding their deaths.

In coordination with this exhibition, Gormley Gallery and Notre Dame of Maryland University will offer a series of free programs; please see schedule below. At the conclusion of the exhibition, the portraits will be gifted to the victims' families.

Alumnae Exhibition

The Alumnae Exhibition features the work of more than 40 alumnae of the Art department at Notre Dame of Maryland University. This show is part of the celebration of Notre Dame’s 125th anniversary, and the artists included represent graduating classes from every decade since the 1950s. Works include paintings, sculpture, photography, works on paper, and mixed media pieces, and the breadth and depth of artistic expression in this show affirm the strength and vitality of the arts in the University’s history.

Senior Thesis Exhibition

Reception: Monday, May 6, 2019, from 4:30 to 6:30pm

The Senior Thesis Exhibition showcases the work of Sabine Hern-Nagle, Esther Jones, Caroline O’Donnell, and Nia Willis, four seniors graduating from the Art department. Works include oil paintings, works on paper, illustrations, mixed media pieces, and an art history thesis. The students are working with concepts such as myths and fables, power and the human form, the intersection of psychology and art, and the reclamation of the gaze.

tet[R]ad: Draw and Play Here Session #10

The tet[R]ad Project is an international art-making exchange envisioned and developed by artists David Modler and Samuel Peck. This ongoing endeavor fosters arts-based learning through one-to-one visual journal collaborations. tet[R]ad includes faculty, students and artists as well as others from the broader community. Participants in the project are encouraged to share their drawings, writings, collages, opinions and experiences as they make connections through collaboration and dialogue with an artistic accomplice. The tet[R]ad project is free and open to everyone; all are welcome and encouraged to join and contribute. In the end, the primary mission of tet[R]ad is to honor our collective image-making impulses in order to expand and cultivate a more creative community.

In the spirit of this collaborative exhibition, we’re doing things a little differently for this show! Instead of an opening reception, we're hosting a mid-run reception. The installation will grow and develop as students and community members work with the artists to complete it; the reception will celebrate its full realization.

Bruce McKaig: A Picture is Worth a Thousand Workers

Bruce McKaig's practice explores the power of images to reshape realities, sometimes juxtaposing antiquated techniques or objects with contemporary themes and issues. This exhibition, organized around three series -- the cowboy, the wrestler, and the dictator -- combines McKaig's own artworks with curated images and materials that explore some of the historical and current cultural and socio-economic relationships between photography and those themes.

Gregory McLemore: Décadent

Gregory McLemore’s work reclaims the tradition of the 19th-century Decadent movement, whose artists and writers were known for their florid description of scenery, their embrace of perversion, their indulgence in the exotic, and their tendency to shift between reality and the irrational.

Counterfeit Sky - Ajay Malghan

This exhibition presents recent paintings and photographs from two bodies of current work by Ajay Malghan. Malghan uses alternative materials to create one of a kind paintings and photographs which explore the element of alchemy as the catalyst in their creation.
