​Global Healthcare Leader to Address Notre Dame Commencement

A leading global voice on the future of healthcare will address Notre Dame of Maryland University graduates and families at the Commencement on May 20, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at the Baltimore Convention Center. Dr. Beverly Malone will be awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Notre Dame.

Dr. Malone has served as President and CEO of the National League for Nursing since 2007. Her distinguished career blends policy, education, administration, and clinical practice – including the position of federal deputy assistant secretary for health under President Bill Clinton. She is internationally recognized as the first African American General Secretary of the United Kingdom (UK) Royal College of Nursing representing 400,000 nurses. President Clinton appointed her to serve on the U.S. delegation to the World Health Assembly, the governing body of the World Health Organization, and later, UK Prime Minister Tony Blair appointed her to serve on the UK delegation for the same group. In the U.S., she contributed to the groundbreaking Institute of Medicine report, “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health,” and served on the Minority Health Federal Advisory Committee.

Art Therapy Department Welcomes Two Study Abroad Students from South Korea

A developing partnership between Notre Dame of Maryland University and CHA University in South Korea provided an opportunity for two South Korean students to study abroad in NDMU’s Art Therapy Department during the fall 2024 semester.

Kyeongmin “Kaya” Lee returned to campus for a second semester abroad after taking a variety of art therapy, art, and psychology courses on campus during the spring, while Jiyeong “Jessica” Song joined her classmate in Baltimore this fall. Both Lee and Song are enrolled in the art therapy program at CHA University, a prestigious medical school located approximately one hour northeast of the South Korean capital of Seoul.

Physician Assistant Studies

Congratulations to all students recognized in our inaugural Physician Assistant Studies White Coat Ceremony in December! The event celebrated Notre Dame's first PA cohort, which is set to begin clinical rotations in January after completing the program’s didactic year coursework.

​School of Education

School of Education professors Antonio Ellis, Joanna Newton, and Patty Silver participated in a professional development opportunity hosted by Maryland's Higher Education Environmental Literacy program. The colleagues were trained in preparing teachers to incorporate environmental literacy in their instruction. They also experienced a day-long boat trip sponsored by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, where they gained insights into actions affecting the health of the Chesapeake Bay.

Dr. Ryan Schaaf, associate professor of Educational Technology, presented at the annual Virginia Society of Education in Technology conference. He facilitated two sessions (one face-to-face and one virtual) entitled A Brief History of the Future of Education: Learning in the Age of Disruption. Participants explored resistance to change, the learning attributes of the digital generations, and the trajectories of education.

Professor Stephanie Savick, Associate Professor Patty Silver, and Assistant Professor Rosemary Poling, along with former School of Education colleague, Dr. Kristine Larson, published a recent article on their collaboration to support teachers in the School of Education's Professional Development School network. Congratulations to Dr. Rebecca Leonard D'24, a recent graduate of NDMU's Higher Education Leadership for Changing Populations doctoral program who was selected as Penn State University's 2024 Undergraduate Staff Excellence Award recipient. Dr. Leonard currently serves as the associate director of new student orientation at Penn State.

A congratulations to Jana Bennette, a former student of Dr. Christa de Kleine, for her upcoming presentation at the Southern Sociological Society 2025 Annual Conference in Charlotte, NC, from April 9–12, 2025. Jana’s conference paper will contribute to this year’s theme, Sociology of the Future and the Future of Sociology. Thank you to Dr. de Kleine for her invaluable mentorship in guiding Jana through this process. We are proud of both Jana’s accomplishments and Dr. de Kleine’s dedication to her students’ success!

Congratulations to all of our School of Nursing graduates who were recognized on campus on December 13! The afternoon began with a pinning ceremony for our December Hybrid ABSN graduates in LeClerc Theatre, and it concluded with a celebration for our inaugural nurse practitioner MSN graduates in Marikle Chapel.
