BALTIMORE – A student organization in Notre Dame of Maryland University’s School of Pharmacy received a prestigious national award in recognition of the group’s commitment, engagement, and demonstration of excellent leadership.

NDMU’s Phi Lambda Sigma (PLS) Delta Beta Chapter was recognized as the PLS Division I Chapter of the Year during a virtual award ceremony in April. Phi Lambda Sigma, also known as the national Pharmacy Leadership Society, has a total of 138 chapters in universities located across the United States, British Columbia, and Puerto Rico. NDMU’s chapter, which is one of 45 grouped in Division I, was selected as Chapter of the Year for the first time in the organization’s young history.

"Our Delta Beta chapter has upheld the highest professionalism and servant leadership standards since its inception in 2011,” said Dr. Sharon Park, PLS faculty advisor, professor and assistant dean for academic affairs and assessment. “All of our members are leaders in their respective offices and student organizations, wearing multiple hats and achieving numerous milestones beyond their academic pursuits. I am delighted to recognize our current and alumni members for their continuous efforts to grow and develop as future leaders in pharmacy and society."

Chapter of the Year recipients were recognized based on the quality of chapter reports submitted for the 2022-23 academic year. Events held by NDMU’s 25 PLS members that year included a curriculum vitae (CV) review and mock interview workshop, a workshop focused on writing strong letters of intent for residency applications, a professional headshot day, and a 5K Fun Run in collaboration with the Baltimore County Department of Aging.

Edgardo Rodriguez D’24 served as president for NDMU’s PLS chapter in 2022-23. Other student officers on the executive board included Marielie Carrasquillo Rivera D’24 (vice president), Alyssa Lagasca D’24 (secretary), Eric Liggins D’24 (treasurer), and Claudia Torres Montes D’24 (historian).

“This award would not be possible without the work of so many extraordinary leaders in our chapter who developed a variety of initiatives and projects,” said Rodriguez. “The chapter leaders invested countless hours to plan projects and obtain resources to support our events. This award demonstrates the accomplishment of our goal to leave a legacy and have NDMU’s School of Pharmacy recognized at the national level. It demonstrates that great things can happen in small places when talented people work together.”
