Internship Guidelines

To qualify for an internship at NDMU, you must fulfill all prerequisites and should keep the following guidelines in mind.

Note: Your department may have more extensive requirements.

Undergraduate

  • Sophomores, juniors, and seniors with a minimum 2.0 GPA are eligible.
  • Transfer students who have studied at least one semester at NDMU (at least 12 credit hours) and have earned a minimum 2.0 GPA are eligible.
  • A maximum of 6 internship credit hours may count toward your major and a maximum of 12  internship credit hours may count toward your 120 credit hour degree program.
  • Internships should be 85% substantive (no more than 15% administrative).

Graduate

  • The internship must be identified as a course on the Program of Study.
  • Internships should be 85% substantive (no more than 15% administrative).
  • No more than six internship credit hours may count toward your graduate program. Individual programs may set lower limits.

For assistance landing an internship, schedule an appointment with the career center or search our online resources.

Once you have secured a position, meet with your academic advisor or faculty supervisor to confirm your eligibility, complete internship registration forms, and obtain necessary approvals.

Part-time vs. Full-time

Academic year internships are part-time, while summer internships may be part or full-time. 

Paid and Unpaid

Employers are encouraged to offer paid internships, especially during the summer. Sponsoring organizations offering non-paying internships must adhere to the United States Department of Labor internship legal criteria established for volunteer internships.
