Community service has been a vital part of Notre Dame of Maryland University since its inception. Our program seeks to maintain its long history of prioritizing service to those neglected by society.
The office of campus ministry & service in collaboration with Our Daily Bread hosted a sleep out on the weekend of October 12th-13th 2018. Fourteen Notre Dame students participated in this experience. Upon arrival, students were greeted by Our Daily Bread with opening remarks. Then the real treat took place in which students were able to listen to members of Christopher Place. Christopher’s Place is an intensive program that provides formally homeless men with an education and training to prosper in the Baltimore area. Tinsaye, a freshman who participated, shared words that resonated with her from one of the brothers: “Love yourself and be the best person you can be, and always remember to be grateful for what you have.” This provided everyone a chance to reflect on their lives and to be grateful for what they have.
The night was followed by a session in which myths about poverty/homelessness were debunked. A budget simulation helped students realized the burden that comes along with budgeting for daily necessities even when one lives above the poverty level. The night concluded with a prayer service, reflection, and service activities. Finally, it was time to sleep out! Many fearless NDMU students decide to bear the cold weather and possible rain and slept outside. However, during the night some decided to return back inside as the rain started faling. Students quickly realized that they were lucky enough to have a shelter to run back into. This experience proved to be eye opening. Participants realized the true need to address homelessness issues and changing people’s perspectives on the myths associated with it.
