NDMU Together Keeping NDMU Healthy & Safe

As NDMU begins the 2020-2021 academic year, we remind our campus community to stay up-to-date on all our NDMU Together informational pages as new updates are communicated weekly.  With the fall semester quickly approaching and as some of our community members return to campus, we offer a few reminders to help ensure the health and safety of NDMU.

  • NDMU Together Pledge
    • Being a part of the Notre Dame of Maryland University community means we each must take daily actions on and off campus to protect each other and our community. The only way we can be successful is if we all work together to keep our campus safe and healthy. Join our campus community in signing the NDMU Together Pledge.
  • Daily Self-Monitoring & Symptoms Check
    • All NDMU faculty, staff, students, contractors, vendors, and guests will be required to complete a daily self-monitoring and symptoms check prior to any entry to campus or exiting their residence hall room. 
  • Mask Policy
    • All faculty, staff, students, and contractors are required to wear a facemask while on campus. Masks may only be removed when alone in one’s office, residence hall room, while eating in the Dining Hall or Gator Grind, or outside with proper social distancing.
  • Social Distancing
    • Social distancing (maintaining a minimum 6 foot distance between one another) is mandatory in all areas of campus. It is important to keep distance from others whenever possible, even if you have no symptoms, because the virus can be spread before someone knows they are infected. This is especially important for anyone at higher risk. 
  • Hand Washing & Sanitizing
    • Community members should wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after:
      • being in a public space;
      • blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing;
      • eating (as well as before).
    • Over 30 hand-sanitizing stations will be displayed and located at key areas (ingress/egress, elevators, etc.) within all campus buildings. Individuals using hand sanitizer should cover all surfaces of their hands and rub them together until they feel dry. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.

Welcome Week Kicks Off

NDMU is welcoming our new and returning students to campus starting on August 20 as first-year students move into Meletia Hall. Returning students will arrive to campus this weekend and have the opportunity to join in the Orientation and Welcome Week festivities. From August 20 - September 3, all students (both on-campus and off) will have a full slate of virtual and socially distant programming. The full list of programming can be found online, which includes the zoom links and login information for all events.

 2020 Women’s Centennial Summit

The Maryland Commission for Women will be hosting the 2020 Women's Centennial Summit on August 26 from 9:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. The virtual conference commemorates the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, granting women the right to vote. The theme of the Summit will be “From the Right to Vote to the Right to Lead.” It will begin with a keynote address, followed by a panel on the history of the Suffrage Movement in Maryland, and a panel discussion with women thought leaders in various fields, addressing “Women’s Leadership and the Intersectionality of Gender and Race in Times of Crisis.” The Summit is open to the public and there is no charge to participate, but pre-registration is required.

Daily Record Top 100 Women

President Marylou Yam was named to 2020 The Daily Record Top 100 Women List along with several NDMU alums and board members. This is President Yam’s second recognition from The Daily Record, earning her first honor in 2017. The Top 100 Women Anniversary Gala and Award Celebration was originally scheduled to be held in-person but was moved to a virtual format. NDMU served as the Virtual Reception Sponsor where all the 2020 award winners had the opportunity to share their gratitude for being honored with the Top 100 recognition. Check out this year’s The Daily Record Top 100 Women Publication. President Marylou Yam’s profile is featured on page 58.

Others who dedicated their time and effort in making facemasks for NDMU include: Sr. Sharon Slear, Anne Lin, Jennifer Kerr, Amy Rohrs, Marlene Thornton, Cecelia  Cromwell, Colleen Craven (Friend and mother of NDMU student), Robin Riha-Lopez, Mary Jane Riha (W.VA – Mother of NDMU ACP teacher), Katie Redmond (FL – Aunt of NDMU ACP teacher), Joanne LaTulippe (Mother of Deborah Naccarini), Linda Stevens, Pam O’Brien, Jessica Wood, Catherine Subrizi, and Christian Kendzierski. To date, we have over 1000 sewn cloth facemasks and many more in various stages of assembly.

Psychologist Continuing Education

Notre Dame of Maryland University Psychology Department, as an APA approved sponsor, is pleased to offer a series of continuing education seminars for psychologists and other mental health professionals. All seminars are held on Fridays from 9 am-12 pm (3 hours) and upon completion, participants will earn 3 continuing education credits. All seminars will be conducted via Zoom.

York Road Education and Service (YES) Program

Rhea Guzman is the 2020-2021 CCMA AmeriCorps VISTA Member and Coordinator for the York Road Education and Service (YES) Program. She graduated from Notre Dame of Maryland University in December 2019, where she earned her BA in International Relations. In her senior year of college, she volunteered as a YES literacy tutor and was inspired to continue to serve her community through AmeriCorps after graduating. Her hope is to transfer the knowledge of capacity-building and ending poverty into the field of international development. In her free time, she enjoys reading and writing fiction.

Renaissance Institute

The Renaissance Institute is excited to offer it’s Fall Course Brochure- our first adventure in remote delivery of classes and other community activities. We hope you will find the course variety enticing and will join us for the Fall Semester which will begin- on-line and via the Zoom platform- on September 8, 2020. Registration is open now through August 20.

To participate, members will need access to a laptop, iPad, MAC, or similar device that has both camera and microphone capability. We encourage you to sign up NOW for a free Zoom account at zoom.us and practice using Zoom with family and friends. RI also is offering some Zoom orientation classes for our instructors and members to increase Zoom using skills and confidence.

Tutors of K-12 students are very much needed. NDMU’s students can find these positions on Quadjobs.com. The site is a marketplace for temporary, informal, and local jobs. Families with a need for tutors or caregivers can use a promo code, gogators, to create a free listing. Another good source of job listings is LinkedIn’s Who’s Hiring Now.

Copyright and Online Instruction

Are you wondering if your online course materials comply with copyright law? This workshop will provide the basics of copyright law for online instruction and how it differs from teaching in the face-to-face classroom. Library Content Changes Starting July 1

Journals, databases and ebooks are changing due to inflationary increases by publishers along with the COVID-19 economic challenges. The Library is cancelling some titles as of July 1, 2020.  Specific titles affected will be communicated to academic departments. Contact your liaison librarian (https://www.lndl.org/contact) for help in finding alternative resources via Interlibrary Loan (ILL) or to ask questions regarding changes to journals, databases, and ebooks.

Additional service changes due to COVID-19 restrictions include print reserves and physical ILL books. Print reserves will not be available in the Fall; however, liaison librarians will work with you to locate and access alternative materials (https://www.lndl.org/contact). ILL for physical books is currently not available; however, you can request access to online materials not owned by LNDL through ILL. Once physical books are available via ILL we will notify you.

Athletics

NDMU Athletics’ Fall Season Suspended Due to COVID-19 Concerns

The Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Board of Directors announced the fall 2020 athletic season is suspended due to safety and health concerns related to COVID-19. This suspension affects NDMU’s cross county, field hockey, soccer and volleyball teams.

“Naturally we are disappointed for all of our student-athletes but understand the safety and health of all of our athletes and campus communities are most important,” said Renee Bostic, NDMU director of athletics and wellness. “NDMU Athletics is working on robust and exciting programming outside of the official fall season, for our student-athletes to safely participate in and engage.” 

The University is working with the NCAA, CSAC and fellow college and university members in looking forward to the winter and spring seasons and how they can accommodate the suspended fall season play during these times.

School News

Keira Mull ‘20 had two of her research articles accepted for publication with the Northeast Regional Honors Council Journal, Illuminate. Since only one of the two articles will make the final publication, Keira will make her selection for which to submit.

Dr. Heather Carpenter, Associate Professor and Chair of the Business and Economics Department, co-authored and published the ebook: Nonprofit Crisis Management: Response to COVID-19.

Jennifer Kerr, Associate Professor in the Biology Department, was elected as the Vice President of the International Association for Dental Research’s Microbiology and Immunology Group. The International Association for Dental Research is a nonprofit organization with over 10,000 individual members worldwide, dedicated to driving dental, oral and craniofacial research to advance health and well-being worldwide through discovery and dissemination. Dr. Kerr’s research focuses on addressing the need for new and minimally invasive approaches for the management of dental cavities (caries), a microbial infection of the teeth.

Jamesha Caldwell ’21, a Criminology Major, interviewed two true-crime authors from Baltimore, who published a book surrounding the 2015 Uprisings in Baltimore. The interview was published in the BmoreArt Magazine.

Nakia McKinley M’20 in the Leadership in Special Education Master’s program re-launched her book entitled Holy Inspirations: A Collection of Inspirational Poetry. It is available on Amazon and Kindle.

Michele Schuler (Alum 2016) will present at the Association Middle Level Educators (AMLE20) Virtual Conference October 23-25.

Dr. Sabita Persaud has been named the editor of The Maryland Nurse, a peer-review journal. The journal is a publication of the Maryland Nurses Association, a state-wide non-profit, professional membership organization for Registered Nurses in Maryland that provides direction and a voice for the profession of nursing in Maryland. The journal publishes four times per year and distributes to all registered nurses in the state, nursing libraries and state legislative offices – approximately 77,000.

Mary O'Connor, PhD, RN, CENP, FACHE Professor of Nursing and Beth Tingo, MS, RN Director, Population Health, University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center recently published Addressing population health: Regional partnership in Nursing Administration Quarterly. In addition, Mary was guest co-editor of the issue Leadership Environments:  Leading Care Anywhere with Maria R. Shirey PhD, MBA, RN, NEA-BC, ANEF, FACHE, FNAP, FAAN Professor of Nursing University of Alabama Birmingham. 

School of Pharmacy

School News

Assistant Professor, Ashley Moody, was selected as a Faculty Scholar at the NACDS Foundation for the 2020-2021 Faculty Scholars Program. Five faculty members from pharmacy schools and colleges from across the nation were selected to participate in the 18-month program. The research mentorship program provides, “the opportunity to engage in community pharmacy-based, patient-centered research. Each Faculty Scholar will receive a starter grant to spearhead a patient-focused research project.”

Dr. Mayrim Millan-Barea '18 was featured in an interview with Somos Baltimore Latino, answering questions about the role of a pharmacist in the community.

Kofi Andoh, P4 pharmacy student, was elected to the Student National Pharmaceutical Association's executive board. Kofi will serve as the organization's 2020-2021 Vice President.
