Wayne Smith Named Head Softball Coach
College of Notre Dame of Maryland Athletic Department is proud to announce the hiring of Wayne Smith as its new head softball coach. Smith begins his duties as head of the Gator softball program effective immediately.
Smith arrives at College of Notre Dame after several years of coaching at the high school level. Most recently he served as head softball coach at Towson Catholic High School for three seasons, leading the team to an impressive 47-6 overall record between 2006 and 2009. In his three seasons at Towson Catholic, Smith won three conference championships and earned two other tournament championships. On top of the numerous on the field accomplishments, off the field his student-athlete’s have had a collective grade point average of at least 3.62 each year he served as head coach at Towson Catholic.
“I am excited to welcome Wayne Smith to College of Notre Dame athletics community,” stated Athletic Director Michael Spinner. “Besides an exceptional level of success as a high school coach, Wayne made it clear that he has the right idea regarding how to run a Division III athletics program, and he displayed an enthusiasm and know-how to lead our softball program in the right direction. I think College of Notre Dame has tremendous potential for terrific softball, and I believe we have hired the right person to lead our team.”
In addition to his duties at Towson Catholic, Smith also served as a coach for the Parkville, Maryland Fastpitch travel team since 2006. This past spring, his 12u team took home a ASA State Championship while his 10u and 12u teams have finished the top-15 in Nationals in each of the past two seasons.
Prior to his time at Towson Catholic, Smith spent 11 seasons coaching at St. Joseph’s of Fullerton.
The Gators finished the 2009 campaign with a 1-23 overall and 1-21 Colonial States Athletic Conference record in their first season of NCAA Division III play.
